Vegan Blueberry Flax Bagels are soft and delicious. These bagels are vegan and made with non-dairy yogurt, flour and ground flax for an extra dose of fiber. Blueberry bagels are easy to make and are completely yeast-free!

I first made bagels last year during quarantine, and absolutely fell in love with just how simple and easy they were to make. Fast forward to today, my video has over 1 million views on Pinterest and several remakes. Since then, I’ve made many different flavors of bagels, but the number one question that I consistently get asked is if there is a vegan option! So here we are, making some Vegan Blueberry Flax Bagels!

These bagels are made with non-dairy yogurt, flour, and ground flaxseed. There is no yeast required, so it’s essentially a very simple recipe to make!

Ingredients in vegan blueberry flax bagels

These Blueberry Flax Bagels are vegan. They are made with a handful of really simple ingredients, and no! You won’t need any yeast for these.

flour- for this recipe I used organic unbleached white flour. You may also use whole-wheat flour as a 1:1 swap or any other flour or gluten-free alternative that states it would be an equal 1:1 swap. This recipe won’t work with almond, or oat flour.

ground flax- You will see me add in ground flax to almost all of my recipes. It’s relatively tasteless, but adds such a great nutritional value to the recipe.

baking powder- since we aren’t using any yeast in this recipe, baking powder will be key to allow the dough to really rise.

salt- salt to balance out the flavors and also to feed the baking powder so the dough can rise as well.

fresh or frozen blueberries– I used fresh blueberries, but you can also use frozen. If using frozen, please note the dough may turn blue!

How to make Vegan Blueberry Bagels

As I mentioned previously, this bagel recipe is very simple to make. Within a matter of 45 minutes you will be enjoying a freshly baked bagel. Eat it straight out of the oven, or pop it in the toaster for a crispy bagel.

To start, preheat the oven to 375F.

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, and ground flax in a large mixing bowl. Whisk the ingredients until they are well combined.

Next, add in the non-dairy yogurt and blueberries and using a spatula mix until a dough starts to form. You may need to flour your hands and start to kneed the dough. Please note, this dough is very sticky- so don’t be afraid to flour your hands more than once.

Once you have a nice dough, place it in the center of the mixing bowl and cover the top of the bowl with a damp towel. Allow to dough to rest for 10 minutes.

Flour your hands once more and flour a clean working surface. Bring the dough out of the bowl and place it on the flour surface. Begin to kneed to dough once more to ensure everything is really well combined.

Roll the dough into one large ball and using a knife, cut into four equal parts. Again, you may need to flour your hands- that’s okay! Take each part and roll it into a ball, place your pointer finger in the center and begin to spin your finger clockwise until you see a bagel shape start to form.

You can also roll the dough into a log and connect the sides, however I find this to not be the best method.

Spray the tops of the bagels with avocado oil spray and place in the oven. Bake for 25-27 minutes or until the tops of the bagels are golden brown.

Allow the bagels to cool down slightly before enjoying.

How to enjoy Vegan Blueberry Bagels

These bagels taste so yummy straight out of the oven with a vegan cream cheese spread. However, this recipe yields four bagels, so you can also store them in the fridge and enjoy up to 4 days!

I typically cut it in half and pop it in the toaster or air fryer so it gets nice and crispy on the edges, but still tender and soft.

One thing I received a few times over on my Pinterest is that it’s not a bagel unless it’s boiled. Well, true! But I tried boiling these bagels and they did not bake well.

This is not going to taste like your traditional NY bagel because well, it’s simply not a NY bagel. It doesn’t have the same ingredients, it doesn’t follow the same method and plus these are completely vegan!

However, that doesn’t mean they don’t resemble a bagel taste and texture, because they do! It’s a great vegan alternative to those that want to try making their own bagels. Give it a try and let me know what you think!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1/4 cup ground flax

  • 1 Tbsp baking powder

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 cup non-dairy yogurt

Directions

  • To start, preheat the oven to 375F and prepare a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper or a silicon baking mat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, salt, baking soda, and ground flax in a large mixing bowl. Whisk the ingredients until they are well combined.
  • Next, add in the non-dairy yogurt and blueberries and using a spatula mix until a dough starts to form. You may need to flour your hands and start to kneed the dough. Please note, this dough is very sticky- so don’t be afraid to flour your hands more than once.

  • Place bagels on the baking sheet and bake for 25-27 minutes or until the tops of the bagels are golden brown.
  • Allow the bagels to cool down slightly before enjoying.
