The best homemade donut recipe you’ll try

I am OBSESSED with these new healthy chocolate protein donuts. I was truly amazed when they came out of the oven and I had my first bite. They are fluffy, dense and perfectly sweet. Seriously, so dreamy and perfect with a cup of coffee in the morning, or cup of tea in the evening.

If you love Dunkin Donuts but want to have a healthier option, then these Chocolate protein baked donuts are perfect for you. These donuts are rich and chocolatey and are completely vegan and gluten-free!

Ingredients in baked chocolate donuts

Chocolate donuts that are actually healthy? Unlike many packaged breakfast pastries you find at the store, these chocolate protein donuts are made up of fiber, antioxidant rich cocoa powder, and coconut sugar – a breakfast or dessert option you’ll be happy to enjoy.

  • almond flour
  • brown rice flour
  • coconut sugar
  • cacao powder
  • protein powder
  • baking soda
  • salt
  • bananas
  • almond milk
  • almond butter
  • coconut oil
  • vanilla extract
  • sprinkles

How to make these healthy chocolate donuts

Start by greasing a donut pan with non-stick spray so the donuts don’t stick after baking.

Preheat the oven to 350F. In a high speed blender or food processor, combine the banana, almond butter, almond milk, coconut oil and vanilla extract until creamy and smooth. Then, add in the almond flour, brown rice flour, coconut sugar, cacao powder, protein powder, baking soda and salt. The batter will be thick, that’s what you want!

Add the batter to a pipping bag or plastic baggie and cut off the corner. Add the batter to the prepared donut pan and smooth the tops. Bake the chocolate donuts on the oven’s center rack for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Then, let them cool before going around the sides with a knife and popping out of the pan. Frost with three ingredient caramel frosting and top with sprinkles.

Healthy caramel frosting

You can use whichever frosting that you prefer on top of these donuts, however, I love to make my own three ingredient caramel frosting. You will need almond butter, maple syrup and avocado oil.

Simply, combine the three ingredients together until smooth and creamy. Spread the frosting over the baked donuts and top with your favorite sprinkles.

It’s important to use an all natural creamy almond butter rather than one that contains palm oil so that you achieve that creamy frosting texture. You can also use a different oil rather than avocado, I would recommend coconut or olive oil.
