Ingredients And Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Classic Cinnamon Rolls. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.

Warm milk is what will activate the yeast. This recipe works best with dairy milk, but i’m sure you can use a plant-based alternative if necessary, although i have not tested it with this recipe yet.

We will use both brown sugar and coconut sugar for this recipe.

A touch of salt to help balance out all the flavors.

I prefer to use a unsalted grass-fed butter which is higher quality than regular butter. But any type will work. If using a salted butter, then don’t add in additional salt.

Eggs are necessary for binding all the ingredients together and creating a fluffy texture.

This recipe works best with all purpose flour, I have not tested it with a 1:1 gluten free flour.

The filling is made with butter, sugar, and cinnamon.

These cinnamon rolls are topped with a homemade frosting that consists of cream cheese, powdered sugar, maple syrup, vanilla and milk.

FOUR: When ready, make the filling by combining brown sugar, coconut sugar, butter and cinnamon.

Tips And Tricks

I have not tested this recipe without using an electric mixer. However, I’m sure it will work just fine. First combine all the ingredients and then once a dough is formed, knead it for 4-5 minutes and follow the steps as normal.

You want to be careful not to over-work the dough otherwise this will result in a tough cinnamon roll, so be sure to set the timer when you are mixing the ingredients.

If making this recipe for the following day, make the cinnamon rolls all the way up to placing them in a buttered dish, cover and do not let rise. Instead place in the fridge up to 24 hours, when ready to bake allow to set at room temperature for 40 minutes and then bake as directed.

How To Serve And Store

Serve these Classic Cinnamon Rolls with the homemade cream cheese frosting. Cinnamon rolls are best served warm and reheat wonderfully in the microwave.

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge, reheat in the microwave for best results. The oven or air fryer will work as well. Enjoy with the frosting which also needs to be refrigerated.

Taste And Texture

These classic cinnamon rolls are buttery and soft with a tender texture, but firm enough to hold their shape. They are wonderfully sweet, filled with warm cinnamon and sugar and taste amazing with the tangy cream cheese frosting.
