ingredients and Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this Coconut Margarita. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of this page for a full list of ingredients and instructions.
You must use cream of coconut and not coconut cream. I have tried it with both ingredients and the cream of coconut is far better.
Triple sec is an orange liqueur that adds a fruity flavor in mixed drinks, alternatively you can use cointreau.
Use fresh lime juice for best results, or you can use lime juice from a jar.
A touch of honey adds a sweet and subtle flavor that pairs perfectly with the tequila. Or you can use maple syrup or simple syrup.
You can use any type of tequila such as reposado or blanco, I personally love casamigos for this recipe.
how to make
ONE: Start by toasting the coconut on the stovetop, oven or air fryer.
TWO: In a cocktail shaker, add in all the ingredients with a handful of ice. Add on the lid and shake vigorously until the ingredients are well combined.
THREE: Next, rim a glass by dipping it in honey and then coating it in the toasted coconut. Fill it with ice and then pour the mixture over and enjoy!

Tips and tricks
Use cream of coconut and not coconut cream. There will be a big difference in the cocktail.
To make this recipe vegan use maple syrup instead of honey.
Shake ingredients vigorously for 30 seconds to ensure everything is well incorporated.
Before juicing the lime, firmly roll it on the countertop under the palm of your hand. This helps get the juices flowing. Use a lime juicer for best results.
You can add more sweetener or coconut cream for a sweeter margarita.
How to serve and store
Serve this coconut margarita over ice and with a toasted coconut rim.
This drink is best served immediately, if making a big batch add in the ice last.

Taste
This coconut margarita is the perfect balance of sweet and tart. It has a lovely tropical flavor, it’s strong but not overpowering at all. The toasted coconut on the rim adds a lovely texture and flavor.
frequently asked questions
You can toast it on the stovetop, in the oven or in the air fryer. On the stove, add the shredded unsweetened coconut to a pan and watch it carefully. Cook on medium heat for 3-5 minutes. Alternatively you can bake it in the oven on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper at 350F for 3-5 minutes.
You can make a pitcher of this coconut margarita, just be sure to store the ice separately.
Yes, absolutely. However, I have tested it with both and I much prefer the cream of coconut. It’s much sweeter and have a better taste. If opting for canned coconut, you will need to add in much more sweetener.
