ingredients and Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Gluten Free Apple Bread. Be sure to scroll down to the recipe card at the bottom of this page for a full list of ingredients and instructions.
I used vegan butter in this recipe to make it dairy free. You can however, substitute regular butter if you don’t mind it not being dairy free.
This recipe isn’t vegan because it used regular eggs. I have not tested this recipe with a vegan egg replacement, but my guess would be that it wouldn’t work as well since this apple bread is made with almond flour.
I love using organic cane sugar, but any white sugar, coconut sugar or brown sugar will work. I have not tested this recipe with liquid sweeteners like maple syrup, honey or agave yet.
Use any type of milk that you prefer, almond, cashew, hemp, macadamia, oat, etc. Otherwise if you don’t mind this recipe not being dairy free you can use regular cows milk.
Vanilla extract adds a lovely flavor.
Almond flour is the base of this recipe making it gluten free. I have not tested this bread with any other flour substitutes yet but my best guess would be oat flour as an alternative.
A touch of salt helps balance out all the flavors.
Baking soda and baking powder work together to help this recipe rise and have a fluffy texture.
And of course, you can’t forget the apples for the apple bread! I personally love honeycrisp, but you can use any red apple that you prefer! Using a green apple will result in a tart and sour taste rather than light and sweet.
how to make
ONE: In an electric mixer, add in the eggs and sugar and beat on high-speed for about 2 minutes or until the mixture is white and creamy. Then, gradually add in the melted vegan butter nut milk and vanilla extract and mix until combined.

TWO: Then, gradually add in the almond flour, salt, baking powder and baking soda and whisk until just combined. Fold in the chopped apples by hand with a rubber spatula until well incorporated.

THREE: Layer the loaf pan with batter, then cinnamon and sugar, then more batter and finish it off with the rest of the cinnamon and sugar mixture.

FOUR: Using a knife or toothpick make zig-zag motions until the cinnamon and sugar is well mixed in. This helps create a delicious crunchy topping.

FIVE: Bake the loaf in the oven for 55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Remove and let cool completely before taking out of the pan. Slice into and enjoy!

Tips and tricks
Coat your loaf pan with non stick spray and line it with parchment paper. This is to ensure nothing sticks!
Bake only until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
Since this is an almond flour base bread, it will be a little softer than your traditional bread.
Use red apples for best results- my favorite is honey-crisp!
How to serve and store
Don’t slice into gluten free apple bread until it has fully cooled.
Serve this bread with a cup of coffee, juice or even warm it up and enjoy it with a scoop of ice cream!
Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy for up to 3 days.
Alternatively, store this bread in an airtight container in the fridge, and enjoy for up to 4 days.
To freeze, slice into individual slices and wrap tightly, store in the freezer and enjoy up to 1 month. Let this bread thaw on the counter at room temperature for best results.

Taste and Texture
This gluten free apple bread is light, moist and fluffy. It’s a little more delicate than you traditional banana bread or apple bread since it’s made with almond flour.
It has a sweet cinnamon and sugar filling and a crunchy but sweet topping.
The apples are soft and warm.
