Ingredients And Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Matcha Overnight Oats. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.
Use old fashioned rolled oats for best results. Steel cut or quick oats won’t work the same.
Chia Seeds are a great source of omega-3’s, which is a healthy fat. If you don’t have chia seeds, you can omit them from this recipe.
Be sure you are using a food-grade Matcha Powder such as pique. Green tea leaves that you’d steep in hot water to make tea won’t work.
I love using Maple syrup as an all natural unrefined sugar. You may use honey, agave, date syrup or even sugar like cane sugar, brown sugar or coconut sugar.
To keep this recipe vegan and dairy free, use a dairy free yogurt, otherwise any plain yogurt will work. You may also use vanilla for added flavor and sweetness.
A touch of vanilla extract adds flavor to any recipe.
You can use any type of milk such as oatmilk, almond milk, cashew milk, coconut or dairy milk.
For the toppings I opted for raspberries, blueberries and granola. But feel free to use your favorite toppings or fresh fruit instead!

My Favorite Containers For Overnight Oats
These are the jars that are shown in the photos, they are spice jars, but work great for overnight oats.
Alternatively, you can also use weck jars, mason jars, these glass jars with plastic lids, or these glass jars with a bamboo lids.

Taste And Texture
These Matcha Overnight Oats have a lovely, but subtle earthy flavor in each bite. They aren’t overly sweet, but the sweetness can be adjusted with more maple syrup or sweetener of choice.
The texture is soft, creamy and chewy.
If you don’t like the texture of overnight oats you can add granola on top or you can blend them and the texture will be more like pudding. Check out my blended overnight oats recipe for directions on how to do that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Use a food grade matcha green tea powder.
You may be able too, but the texture will be totally different than pictured above, and you won’t need as much liquid. I would reduce the amount to 1/2 cup.
Yes totally! Just be sure to use certified gluten free oats.
For the photo, I added two jars into one. The oats will expand slightly after soaking but not as much as shown.
