Ingredients And Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Strawberry Cheese Danish. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.

Use frozen puff pastry sheets to save on time, otherwise, if you have a favorite homemade puffy pastry recipe you can use that as well. If you are vegan, opt for a vegan alternative.

I used regular cream cheese for this recipe, but you can also use lite. If dairy-free, opt for a dairy free alternative.

We will be using both the egg yolk and the egg white for this recipe.

Vanilla extract adds a ton of flavor.

Coconut sugar is needed to sweeten the cream cheese filling. You can use any type of sugar such as white sugar or monk fruit sweetener. 

The red strawberry puree is made with fresh strawberries, you can use any type of fruit that you’d like! 

Butter will help the curd have a lovely taste and texture- I prefer to use grass-fed butter but any butter will work. 

Lemon juice will bring a bight and zesty taste. 

How To Make

ONE: start by making the strawberry puree by blending fresh strawberries in a blender until smooth and creamy. Strain it through a fine mesh strainer to remove any seeds. 

TWO: Add the strawberry puree into a medium saucepan and stir over medium to low heat until it starts to simmer, stirring consistently. Once the mixture has reduced by half, remove from heat and let cool. 

THREE: Then, add in the egg and egg yolks, sugar, lemon juice and food coloring if desired. Mix well and then place back on the burner on medium to low heat and simmer for 5 more minutes. Remove from heat once it curdles and mix in the butter. Then, set aside to cool. 

FOUR: Next, preheat oven to 400F and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper. In a stand mixer, add in the softened cream cheese, coconut sugar, vanilla extract and egg yolk. Beat on high speed until mixture is light and fluffy. 

FIVE: Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet and use a football cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place them on the prepared baking sheet and use a knife to scored the edges. 

SIX: Fill each center with the cream cheese mixture, then brush will an egg wash and sprinkle with sugar. Bake until golden brown. 

SEVEN: Once the baked footballs have cooled completely, add in the strawberry curd and decorate with the football laces if desired and enjoy! 

Tips And Tricks

Let strawberry puree mixture cool for about 15-20 minutes before adding in the egg yolk and then mix slowly so that you don’t scramble the egg.

If you don’t want to make these football shaped, you can use any type of cookie cutter instead, a round one would work best.

Use cane sugar instead of coconut sugar if you want the cream cheese filling to be white instead of brown.

Let danishes cool for about 15 minutes before adding on the strawberry curd.

If you don’t have a pipping bag for the white chocolate, you can use a plastic baggie instead.

How To Serve And Store

Serve these Strawberry Cheese Danish warm or at room temperature with dusted powdered sugar, or white chocolate to make the football laces. Enjoy with a cup of coffee or tea.

Store in an airtight container at room temperature and enjoy within 2 days. Cheese danishes can also be refrigerated and enjoyed within 4-5 days. Reheat in the oven, microwave or air fryer.

Ingredients

Strawberry curd

  •   16oz fresh strawberries, about 2.5 cups
  •   ½ cup coconut sugar
  •   1 large egg
  •   2 large egg yolks
  •   1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice
  •   2 Tbsp grass-fed butter

Danishes

  • 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed
  • 8oz regular cream cheese, can use dairy free if needed
  • 1/3 cup coconut sugar, can use cane sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 egg yolk
  • egg wash, egg white with splash of water
  • Turbinado sugar

Directions

  3. Then, add in the coconut sugar, egg, egg yolks, lemon juice and food coloring if desired. Mix well and then place back on the burner on medium to low heat and simmer for 5 more minutes. Remove from heat once it curdles and mix in the butter. Then, set aside to cool.
  4. Next, preheat oven to 400F and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  5. In a stand mixer, add in the softened cream cheese, coconut sugar, vanilla extract and egg yolk. Beat on high speed until mixture is light and fluffy.
  6. Roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet and use a football cookie cutter to cut out shapes. Place them on the prepared baking sheet and use a knife to scored the edges.
  7. Fill each center with the cream cheese mixture, then brush the edges with an egg wash. (egg whites mixed with splash of water) and then sprinkle the edges with turbinado sugar. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Once the baked footballs have cooled completely, add on the strawberry curd.
  9. Then, melt white chocolate in the microwave with 1 tbsp of coconut oil. Melt in 30 second increments, stirring well in between each round. Once fully melted, add into a pipping bag and create football laces on danishes and enjoy!
