Breaking down everything you need to know about making cake pops from scratch. This recipe takes your standard box of cake mix and turns it into bakery style cake pops with just a few simple ingredients!
Prep Time 4 hourshours
Cook Time 30 minutesminutes
Total Time 5 hourshours
Ingredients
1box of cake mix(I used strawberry)
1container of frosting(I used cream cheese)
124oz bag of candy melts, I used chocolate
20cake pop sticks
optional(sprinkles)
Instructions
Start by baking your cake as directed on the cake mix box and then immediately covering with plastic wrap or foil and placing it in the fridge to chill for minimum 4 hours, or overnight.
Add chilled cake into a stand mixer and beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Add in 1-2 tbsp of frosting and allow the cake to mix for another 3-5 minutes. You should start to see a play dough consistency.
Use a cookie scoop and roll cake into balls. Place on a baking sheet that's lined with parchment paper and set aside.
Melt candy melts in the microwave in 30 second increments. Dip one end of the cake pop stick into the melted chocolate and then press into the center of each cake ball. Careful not to poke all the way through. Chill for 10 minutes.
Then, dip and coat each cake pop in the melted chocolate and place down on the baking sheet or on a styrofoam sheet if you want them to be standing. Sprinkle immediately with sprinkles and enjoy once the chocolate has hardened completely.
Notes
Chilling the cake it optimal for creating these cake pops. This allows the cake to become extra moist and bind together without having to use too much frosting.
If done right, you should only need a small spoonful of frosting.
If for some reason your cake isn't binding together, don't be afraid to add in a touch more frosting until it reaches a play dough consistency.
Once you have added the sticks into the cake pops, chill them for 10 minutes to ensure the stick is fully binded.
Add sprinkles on the cake pops immediately after dipping if desired.
You can use a styrofoam sheet to make standing cake pops or place them face down.
