If my signature cottage cheese jars have already convinced you how good cottage cheese can be in dessert, this Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse is the next recipe you need to try. Creamy cottage cheese blends with cacao, maple syrup, and vanilla into a thick, silky chocolate mousse that feels rich and indulgent while using just a handful of simple ingredients.

If you love easy chocolate desserts that feel a little elevated, this mousse is such a fun one to keep on repeat. Top it with berries like I do on my Cheesecake Jars, add coconut whipped cream, or pair it with something crunchy like the cookie crumbles from my Cookie Dough Overnight Oats. And if chocolate recipes are your thing, this is right at home alongside my No Bake Cottage Cheese Truffles and Double Chocolate Mug Cake for another quick dessert option when the craving hits.

How to Make Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse

Add ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth.

Taste the mousse and adjust as needed, add more maple syrup for extra sweetness or a little more cacao powder for a deeper chocolate flavor, then blend again briefly. I personally love it exactly as written, but I’m also a big cottage cheese fan, so don’t be afraid to tweak it and make it your own.

Chill the mousse, optional. You can absolutely dig in right away but chilling it will turn it from pudding to more mousse like. Add toppings if desired, like my coconut whip cream and serve!

Tips & Tricks

  • Use a thick cottage cheese like Good Culture for the smoothest, creamiest mousse and best flavor. Thinner brands can create a looser texture.
  • Blend longer than you think you need to. A full 1–2 minutes helps break down every curd so the mousse turns silky and dessert-like.
  • Start with less cacao powder and sweetener, then adjust after blending. This lets you customize the richness and sweetness to your taste.
  • Chill the mousse before serving for the best texture. Even 30 minutes in the fridge helps it thicken and gives it that classic mousse feel.
  • Have fun with toppings. Fresh berries, coconut whipped cream, chocolate curls, granola, or crushed cookies make it feel like a whole new dessert each time.

Optional Magic Shell Topping

For a fun chocolate shell topping, melt 2 tablespoons chocolate chips with 1 teaspoon coconut oil until smooth. Spoon it over chilled mousse and let it sit for a minute or two until it hardens into a crackable chocolate shell.

How to Save & Store

Store the chocolate cottage cheese mousse in an airtight container or individual jars in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I love portioning it into small jars so it’s ready to grab whenever a chocolate craving hits.

If adding toppings like whipped cream, berries, or the magic shell, wait to add those just before serving for the best texture and freshness. Give the mousse a quick stir before enjoying if any separation occurs after chilling.

This Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse is a rich, creamy no-bake dessert made with cottage cheese, cacao powder, maple syrup, and vanilla. It blends into a silky chocolate treat in minutes and is perfect for meal prep or an easy sweet bite straight from the fridge.
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings 2 servings

Ingredients

Chocolate Cottage Cheese Mousse

  • 1 cup cottage cheese (good culture for best texture)
  • 2 tbsp cacao powder (start with 1 and adjust to taste)
  • 2-3 tbsp maple syrup (start with 1 and adjust to taste)
  • 1 Tbsp vanilla bean paste (or 2 tsp vanilla extract)
  • Pinch of salt

Optional Magic Shell

  • 2 Tbsp chocolate chips
  • 1 tsp coconut oil

Instructions

  • Add the cottage cheese, cacao powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and pinch of salt to a food processor.
  • Blend for 1–2 minutes, scraping down the sides as needed, until completely smooth and creamy.
  • Taste and adjust sweetness if desired by adding additional maple syrup or cacao powder. Transfer the mousse to serving jars or bowls.
  • If making the magic shell, melt the chocolate chips with coconut oil until smooth, then spoon over the mousse. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to chill, thicken slightly, and allow the chocolate shell to set.
  • Top with coconut whipped cream, fresh raspberries, chocolate curls, or any toppings you love, then serve chilled and enjoy.

Notes

  • A food processor works best for creating a thick, smooth mousse texture without thinning it out.
  • Start with 2 tablespoons maple syrup, then add more to taste after blending if you prefer it sweeter.
  • Use vanilla bean paste for a deeper vanilla flavor and those pretty specks throughout the mousse.
  • The magic shell topping is best added once the mousse is portioned into jars or bowls.

I used Greek yogurt on my first attempt because I didn’t have cottage cheese. It was too runny and didn’t have the flavor I was hoping for. The cottage cheese packet that I bought only had 6 ounces, so I topped it off with Greek yogurt. The final product was creamy and so delicious! A great treat!

this is SO helpful—thank you for sharing this!! 🫶 yes!! the cottage cheese really makes the difference for both the texture and flavor, so i’m not surprised the all greek yogurt version was a little runny. but love that you made it work with a mix
