Ingredients And Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Homemade Twix Bars. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.
Almond Flour Base: The shortbread layer is made with almond flour, which creates a tender and flavorful base. You can substitute with oat flour if preferred, though the texture will differ slightly!
Sweetener: Maple syrup binds the shortbread layer together, but alternatives like agave, honey, or date syrup can also work.
Vanilla Extract: With just a few ingredients in the shortbread, a touch of vanilla extract enhances the flavor beautifully.
Caramel Layer: Made with soaked and blended dates, the caramel layer is naturally sweet and perfectly smooth. Feel free to use store-bought caramel or my coconut caramel if preferred!
Chocolate Coating: Dip the bars in your favorite dark or milk chocolate. For a fully vegan and dairy-free option, use vegan-friendly chocolate varieties.

How To Make
ONE: Start by making the shortbread layer by combining the almond flour, maple syrup and vanilla extract together in a medium bowl. Once a dough is formed, roll it into a ball and place it between two pieces of parchment paper.

TWO: Roll the dough out until it’s about 1/4″-1/2″ thick. Use a pizza cutter to cut out your equal sized twix bars and place on a baking sheet that’s lined with parchment paper. Bake for 25-30 minutes.

THREE: While the shortbread is baking, make the date caramel to go on top. Blend soaked dates in a blender or food processor for 3-5 minutes until it’s completely broken down and smooth and creamy.

FOUR: Add a thick layers of the date caramel to the baked and cooled twix bars. Place in the freezer to harden for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. When ready, dip in melted chocolate and place back in the freezer to harden once more. ENJOY!!

Tips and Tricks for Perfect Twix Bars
- Shaping the Shortbread: Roll the dough between two pieces of parchment paper to prevent sticking and achieve an even thickness. Cut into 8-9 bars for the perfect size.
- Baking Tips: Bake the shortbread at 250°F to ensure it crisps up without burning. It’s ready when the edges turn golden brown and the surface feels firm to the touch.
- Date Caramel: Use a food processor for the smoothest caramel, but a high-speed blender can work in a pinch. If the caramel isn’t blending well, add a splash of water or vanilla extract to help it break down. Scrape the sides often for an even texture.
- Melting the Chocolate: Mix in a touch of coconut oil for a silky, glossy chocolate coating. Melt in the microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each session to avoid burning the chocolate.

How To Serve And Store
Serve these Twix bars chilled, straight from the fridge, for a perfect treat alongside your favorite coffee or tea!
Store them in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy within 7-10 days. For longer storage, freeze them for up to 30-60 days. If frozen, let the bars sit at room temperature for about 5 minutes to soften before serving.
Taste And Texture
These Twix bars truly capture the essence of a classic Twix, but with a twist using wholesome ingredients. They’re perfectly sweet, with a satisfying crunch and a luscious, creamy caramel layer.
The combination of textures—soft shortbread, crunchy chocolate coating, and smooth caramel—makes every bite a delightful experience!

I made these a few weeks during Halloween. They came out great. I ate them all. So yummh
so happy to hear it! xx
I am wanting to try this recipe! I’ve tried a few others and LOVED them. I was wondering if the almond flour was replaceable with coconut flour
hi emily! i’m so glad you enjoyed them! unfortunately coconut flour is not a 1:1 swap for almond flour and it won’t work the same. it’s a very absorbent flour and will soak everything up so I would not recommend.
VERYYYYYYYY GOOD
glad you enjoyed!!
Came out great! Perfection 👏
yayy!
