VIRAL Brownie Date Balls (with Chocolate Protein Powder)

Chocolate-Covered Date Brownie Balls are an easy no-bake dessert made with Medjool dates, cacao powder, almond flour and chocolate protein powder, then dipped in melted chocolate for a rich, fudgy bite. These chocolate date brownie bites come together in minutes and taste just like a decadent brownie truffle, but no oven required.

These chocolate-covered date brownie balls are one of my favorite little sweet treat moments when I want something chocolatey but don’t feel like baking. They’re naturally sweetened with Medjool dates and blended with cacao powder, chocolate protein powder and almond flour to create a rich, fudgy brownie-like center that tastes way more indulgent than the ingredient list suggests. If you love easy date-based treats, you also have to try my peanut butter stuffed dates with puffed quinoa, another simple recipe that turns dates into the perfect sweet snack.

I also love making a batch of these ahead of time and keeping them in the fridge or freezer so there’s always a quick bite ready when the sweet tooth hits. They’re perfect for grabbing one (or two) after dinner or as a little afternoon treat. If you’re looking for more easy bite-sized snacks like this, you’ll also love my frozen yogurt mini cheesecake bites and chickpea cookie dough bites, which are two other fun, no-bake treats that are just as simple to make and keep on hand.

How to Make

Blend dates in a food processor until a sticky paste forms. Add almond flour, cacao powder, protein powder, vanilla, maple syrup and salt. Blend until thick and fudgy.

Roll into bite-sized balls and place on a lined tray. Freeze for 15–20 minutes (this helps the chocolate set perfectly).

Microwave chocolate chips and coconut oil, stirring until smooth. Using a fork, dip each ball into melted chocolate, tap off excess, and place back on parchment. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt if using.

Refrigerate until chocolate hardens, drizzle with chocolate, freeze again and then top with flakey sea salt.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use soft Medjool dates: Fresh, soft dates blend much easier and create the fudgy brownie texture. If your dates feel dry, soak them in warm water for 5–10 minutes and pat dry before blending.
  • Blend until the mixture sticks together: The mixture should look thick, slightly doughy. If it feels too dry, add 1–2 teaspoons of warm water or maple syrup to help it come together.
  • Roll with slightly damp hands: This prevents the mixture from sticking to your hands and helps create smooth, even brownie balls.
  • Freeze before dipping: Chilling the balls for about 15–20 minutes helps them firm up so they hold their shape when dipped in melted chocolate.
  • Use a fork for dipping: Place each ball on a fork, dip into the melted chocolate, and gently tap off the excess for a smooth coating.
  • Customize the topping: A sprinkle of flaky sea salt adds the best sweet and salty contrast, but crushed nuts, cacao nibs, or shredded coconut are also great options.
  • Keep the chocolate smooth: Adding coconut oil to the melted chocolate helps it stay glossy and creates a thinner, easier-to-dip coating.

How to Save and Store

Store the chocolate-covered date brownie balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1-2 weeks. The chocolate stays firm and the centers remain soft and fudgy.

These freeze really well. Place them in a freezer-safe container or bag and store for up to 2 months. Let them sit at room temperature for about 5 minutes before eating so the centers soften slightly.

Make Ahead Tip:
You can make these in advance and keep a batch in the fridge or freezer for a quick sweet treat whenever the craving hits. They’re perfect to grab straight from the fridge for a little chocolate moment during the day.

Hannah Kling
These Chocolate-Covered Date Brownie Balls are a rich, fudgy no-bake chocolate treat made with soft Medjool dates, almond flour, cacao powder, and chocolate protein powder. Blended in minutes and dipped in melted dark chocolate, they create the perfect bite-sized dessert that’s naturally sweet, chocolatey, and easy to prep ahead for a quick sweet treat anytime.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Chill Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings 12 balls

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dates (fresh is best you want them SOFT)
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1/4 cup chocolate protein powder (I used Ritual)
  • 3 tbsp cacao powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup (can sub honey, agave, or even almond butter.)

chocolate coating

  • 1 cup chocolate chips (dark preferred)
  • 1 tsp coconut oil (for melting)
  • Topping: drizzle of more chocolate and flaky sea salt on top

Instructions

  • Blend dates in a food processor until a sticky paste forms. Add almond flour, cocoa powder, chocolate protein powder, vanilla, maple syrup and salt. Blend until thick and fudgy.
  • Roll into bite-sized balls and place on a lined tray. Freeze for 15–20 minutes (this helps the chocolate set perfectly).
  • Microwave chocolate chips and coconut oil in 20-second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  • Using a fork, dip each ball into melted chocolate, tap off excess, and place back on parchment. Sprinkle with flaky sea salt if using.
  • Refrigerate 10–15 minutes until chocolate hardens, drizzle with chocolate freeze again and then top with flakey sea salt.

Notes

  • Soft Medjool dates work best. If they feel firm, soak in warm water for a few minutes and drain before blending.
  • Protein powders vary. If the mixture feels dry, add 1–2 tsp maple syrup or water to help it come together.
  • Coconut oil helps the melted chocolate stay smooth and coat the balls evenly.
  • Freeze the balls before dipping so they hold their shape and the chocolate sets quickly.

Really want to try these, but what can be subbed in for the almond flour? Can’t have due to allergy, thanks!
