10 Minute Cranberry Sauce (naturally sweetened)

This 10-minute cranberry sauce is made with fresh or frozen cranberries and naturally sweetened with maple syrup and fresh orange juice, giving it the perfect balance of tart and sweet without refined sugar. With bright citrus notes, warm cinnamon, and a hint of vanilla, this homemade cranberry sauce comes together on the stovetop in one pot and instantly elevates any Thanksgiving or holiday meal.

If you’ve only ever grabbed the canned cranberry sauce “because that’s what we’ve always done,” consider this your sign to make it homemade this year. It takes almost no effort, and the flavor is unreal — bright, slightly sweet, and way more fresh. I love serving this alongside our holiday mains, but it also doubles as the best spread for leftover turkey sandwiches the next day. And if you’re someone who preps ahead, you can make it days in advance and stash it in the fridge.

Once you have a batch sitting in your fridge, you’ll find a million uses for it beyond Thanksgiving dinner. Spoon it over, leftover turkey pot pies, baked brie or whipped feta for a stunning holiday appetizer, or use it in my Cranberry Overnight Oats, You can even drizzle it on top of desserts like cheesecake jars or even French toast. It’s one of those recipes that makes you feel like you’re doing the most… but really, it’s just simmered fruit in a pot.

Tips and Tricks

  • Use fresh or frozen cranberries — both work: If using frozen, there’s no need to thaw; just add them straight into the pot.
  • Adjust the sweetness at the end: Cranberries vary in tartness, so taste once it cools and stir in a splash of maple syrup if you want it sweeter.
  • Let it cool fully: It will look thin on the stove but thickens beautifully as it cools — don’t panic if it seems loose at first.
  • Add a splash of water if it thickens too much: When reheating or if it’s been in the fridge, a tablespoon of water will loosen it back up.
  • Customize the flavor: Add a cinnamon stick, a splash of bourbon, or extra orange zest for a different twist depending on the vibe of your holiday spread.

Save and Store

Once the cranberry sauce has cooled completely, transfer it to an airtight container or glass jar. It will keep in the fridge for up to 7–10 days, and the flavor gets even better after the first day as everything melds together.

To freeze, store in a freezer-safe container (leaving a little room at the top for expansion) and freeze for up to 3 months — thaw overnight in the fridge when you’re ready to use it. If it thickens after chilling, warm it on the stovetop over low heat and add a splash of water or orange juice to loosen it back up.

A quick and naturally sweetened cranberry sauce made with maple syrup, orange juice, and warm vanilla for a bright, fresh holiday side that comes together in just 10 minutes. Perfect for Thanksgiving dinner, a holiday cheese board, or spooned over leftovers the next day.
Prep Time 2 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 12 minutes
Servings 8 servings

Ingredients

  • 12 oz fresh or frozen cranberries (about 3 cups)
  • ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice (about 1 large orange)
  • 1-2 tsp orange zest
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, add cranberries, maple syrup, orange juice, water, orange zest, cinnamon (if using), and salt.
  • Bring to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to low.
Cook for 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries burst and the sauce thickens.
  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  • Let the sauce cool completely, it will thicken as it sits.

Notes

  • The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools — plan to make it a little ahead of time for best texture.
  • If you prefer a smoother cranberry sauce, blend it with an immersion blender once it cools slightly.
  • Using fresh orange juice (instead of bottled) makes a big difference in the final flavor.
  • For a chunkier texture, lightly mash the cranberries with the back of a spoon instead of fully breaking them down.
  • This sauce tastes even better the next day — ideal for prepping ahead of a busy holiday meal.
