Ingredients And Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Healthy Apple Cinnamon Rolls. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.
This recipe is made with all purpose flour. I have not tested it with a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend or any other flour substitutes.
Baking powder helps these cinnamon rolls rise during baking and have a fluffy texture.
Cinnamon adds a lovely fall flavor and is a necessity for cinnamon rolls.
You can use cane sugar or coconut sugar, but if using coconut sugar you run the risk of having a more brown like cinnamon roll than a traditional blonde color.
Salt helps to balance out all the flavors.
I like to use grass-fed butter but if you’re vegan, vegan butter works great too.
To keep this recipe dairy free, use oat milk, coconut milk, cashew milk or regular milk if you aren’t vegan.
Use red apples for the bet results, these are much sweeter than a green apple. I prefer honeycrisp, gala or fuji.
The frosting is made with leftover apple juice and powdered sugar.

How To Make
ONE: Start by making the dough, melt butter and milk together and then pour over dry ingredients.

TWO: Mix ingredients together until a dough starts to form. Knead for a minute, roll into a ball and keep in the bowl for 15 minutes.

THREE: In the meantime, dice apples and add them to a heated skillet with coconut oil, cinnamon and sugar. Sauté for 5 minutes and then add the apples to a bowl with a strainer to separate the juices.

FOUR: Roll out the dough on a floured surface an then add on the drained cinnamon apples. Tightly roll the cinnamon rolls into a log and use floss to cut into individual pieces.

FIVE: Grease a baking dish and add in the cinnamon rolls and then bake until golden brown.

SIX: Make the frosting by adding in some powdered sugar and whisking until combined. Drizzle over baked cinnamon rolls and enjoy.

Tips And Tricks
Don’t overwork the dough when kneading, instead knead the dough until all ingredients are just combined.
Removing the juices from the sautéed apples will prevent soggy cinnamon rolls.
Use the leftover juices to create the apple frosting.
How To Serve And Store
Serve these apple cinnamon rolls warm and with a drizzle of apple frosting.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave for best results.

Taste And Texture
These Healthy Apple Cinnamon Rolls are sweet, soft and filled with apple flavors.
These cinnamon rolls have a slightly different texture compared to traditional cinnamon rolls since there isn’t any yeast in them. The texture is soft, chewy and tender.
