Ingredients for Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet (and Substitutions)

Olive oil: Helps get everything sautéing and adds great flavor. You can swap for avocado oil or any neutral oil if you prefer.

Sweet potatoes: Dice them small so they cook quickly and evenly. You could also use butternut squash if that’s what you have.

Ground turkey: A great base for this skillet! Ground chicken or ground beef would work too if you want to switch it up.

Onion: Adds flavor and a little sweetness. Any type of onion works — yellow, white, or even red.

Garlic: Fresh minced garlic gives the best flavor, but pre-minced garlic or even garlic powder will work in a pinch.

Bell pepper: Adds a pop of color and a little crunch. Any color bell pepper is fine here — red, yellow, or orange.

Spinach: Wilts down beautifully into the skillet. You could also use chopped kale or arugula if you want.

Bone broth: Adds moisture and extra flavor. You can use chicken broth, veggie broth, or even water if you don’t have broth on hand.

Spices: cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and black pepper. This combo gives the skillet a warm, savory flavor with just a tiny kick. Feel free to adjust based on your spice preference — if you want more heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes.

Shredded mozzarella cheese: Melts into the skillet for the best finishing touch. Feel free to swap for any melty cheese you like — Monterey Jack or cheddar would be delicious too.

Toppings: sliced avocado, cottage cheese or Greek yogurt, drizzle of honey, parsley
The toppings really pull it all together! You can mix and match based on what you have — I love the combo of cottage cheese and hot honey for that sweet-savory bite.

Tips & Tricks for the Best Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet

  • Dice the sweet potatoes small: Smaller pieces cook faster and give you those nice golden edges without burning.
  • Cover and steam: Adding broth and covering the skillet helps soften the sweet potatoes without drying them out.
  • Don’t skip the toppings: The cottage cheese, hot honey, and avocado totally take this skillet from good to chef’s kiss level — highly recommend piling them on!

How to Serve and Store Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet

Serve: This skillet is best served warm, straight from the pan. Top it with sliced avocado, a dollop of cottage cheese or Greek yogurt, a drizzle of honey, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley for extra flavor.

Store: Let leftovers cool completely, then store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. To reheat, warm it up in a skillet over low heat or microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring between each, until heated through.

This Ground Turkey Sweet Potato Skillet is a flavorful one-pan meal that comes together in just 30 minutes. It's loaded with tender sweet potatoes, ground turkey, and veggies for a quick and cozy dinner idea.
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 30 minutes
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 medium sweet potatoes (diced small (~3 cups))
  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • ½ medium onion (diced)
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1 bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 cups spinach chopped
  • ½ cup bone broth
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp chili powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ½ cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Garnish with sliced avocado (cottage cheese or Greek yogurt and a drizzle of honey)

Instructions

  • Cook the sweet potatoes: Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the diced sweet potatoes and a pinch of salt. Stir occasionally, letting them cook for about 8–10 minutes until they start to soften and get some golden color.
  • Pour in ½ cup of bone broth, cover the skillet with a lid, and let the sweet potatoes steam for another few minutes until they’re fork-tender. (This step helps them cook through without burning.)
  • Push the sweet potatoes over to one side of the skillet to make room. If the skillet looks dry, add a little more olive oil.
  • Add the ground turkey, diced onion, and minced garlic to the open space. Cook, breaking up the turkey with a spatula, for about 5–7 minutes or until the turkey is browned and fully cooked through.
  • Once the turkey is cooked, stir it together with the sweet potatoes. Add the diced bell pepper, cumin, smoked paprika, chili powder, salt, and pepper. Stir everything together and cook for another 3–5 minutes until the veggies are softened and the skillet smells super fragrant.
  • Toss in the chopped spinach and stir it through the skillet. It’ll wilt down quickly — about 1–2 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top and let it melt for about a minute to finish it off.
  • Spoon the skillet into bowls and load it up with all your favorite toppings. I personally love adding sliced avocado, a big scoop of cottage cheese, a drizzle of hot honey, and a sprinkle of fresh parsley. Dig in while it’s still warm and enjoy!

Notes

  • Dice the sweet potatoes small so they cook evenly and soften faster. Bigger chunks will take longer and might not cook through by the time everything else is ready.
  • Adjust the spices to your taste — if you like more heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes or extra chili powder.
  • Don’t skip the toppings! The sliced avocado, cottage cheese, and drizzle of honey totally take this skillet to the next level. Feel free to mix and match based on what you have.
