Ingredients And Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for Healthy Shamrock Shake. Scroll down to the recipe card for a full list of ingredients and instructions.

To make this recipe have a shake like texture, it’s important to use frozen bananas. You can use pre-frozen bananas or slice them up and freeze them yourself.

Frozen avocado will provide a creamy and thick texture while also adding to that green color! Avocados are an extremely delicious healthy fat that will make this shake much more filling.

Lots of fresh spinach will help add to that green color of this shake while also adding in a ton of nutrients!

Fresh mint gives this shake a subtle minty flavor that isn’t over-powering. However, you can use mint extract if preferred.

Almond butter, but you can add in cashew butter instead. I wouldn’t recommend peanut butter for this recipe. Use oat butter for a nut-free option.

To keep this recipe dairy free, use a dairy free vanilla yogurt! Otherwise, you can use greek yogurt, cottage cheese for an added protein boost, or even just a scoop of vanilla ice cream if desired.

Maple syrup is an all natural unrefined sweetener that I love to use in my recipes. However, you can use honey, agave, date syrup or even a couple medjool dates instead.

A touch of cacao nibs adds a great crunch to this shake! You can instead use dairy free chocolate chips if desired.

Again to keep this recipe dairy free use a dairy free milk like oat milk, coconut milk or almond milk. Otherwise, dairy milk is fine but just note this recipe won’t be dairy free anymore.

Add in a handful of ice to create a better shake texture and a colder drink.

I prefer to top mine off with dairy free whipped cream and lots of cacao nibs!

Taste And Texture

This shamrock shake is subtle sweet but in the most perfect way and slightly minty! I love using fresh mint over an extract because you get that minty after-taste as you keep sipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn’t a shake with ice cream?

Yes, technically. But using yogurt in replace adds that creamy texture and is a healthier alternative. However, if you want to add ice cream to yours then I say go for it! The more the merrier.

Can I use mint extract instead of fresh mint leaves?

Yes, absolutely!

What are cacao nibs and do I have to use them?

Cacao nibs are the purest form of chocolate. They are crunchy and bitter but have amazing antioxidant benefits!
